The Beatnik look was based on the idea of anti-materialism and improving the inner self rather than focusing on one's appearance. However, the Beatniks still had a certain look. They dressed often in dark colors, wearing skinny ties and appropriating vintage items such as captains hats or railroad hats representing the working man.
